SIC in a Cancer Setting
June 16 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Serious Illness Conversation Provincial Collaborative ECHO
Session Topic: Serious Illness Conversations in the Cancer Setting
Antony Porcino, PhD
Project Manager, Early symPtom Indicators for Cancer Care (EPICC)
BC Cancer
The cancer care environment seems a likely place to engage in advance care planning and serious illness conversations. Yet, there are multiple barriers—some obvious and some not. The EPICC Project includes increasing palliative skills capacity of BC Cancer, including SICs. To date, we’ve trained over 150 providers, Facilitators, and Masters, bringing BC Cancer’s SIC capacity to over 200 persons.
In the pre-recorded session, I’ll present some of our key initiatives and learnings, including:
• Training and training opportunities
• Sustainability
• Additional SIC education
• Staff interviews about facilitators and barriers
After a quick recap, the ECHO session will delve into some of these topics more deeply, with facilitated discussion about ideas to address issues and opportunities that may be similar in your environments. To think about beforehand: who provides SICs in your environment? Where? When? How?
