The BC Centre for Palliative Care is committed to enabling excellence in care for all British Columbians living with serious illness. As a provincial organization, we collaborate with members of the public, policy makers, regional health authorities, professional bodies and community organizations from across BC to:
- Improve access to Advance Care Planning and palliative care supports for patients and families
- Increase access to quality education, practice support, and resources for health care providers to integrate a palliative approach to care
- Engage citizens and mobilize partnerships across BC to create Compassionate Communities that provide practical support, compassion and care to patients and their families.
The Centre’s focus is to convene and establish provincial networks and community partnerships by drawing together patients, families, care givers, clinicians, health administrators, researchers and community organizations. The Centre serves as a catalyst to stimulate conversations and support efforts that foster excellence in compassionate care.
Dr. Doris Barwich, Executive Director
As our inaugural Executive Director, Dr. Doris Barwich has established the Centre’s strategic focus and mobilized provincial networks and partnerships. Doris is a palliative care clinician, educator and leader. Prior to joining the Centre in 2014, she co-led Fraser Health’s End of Life Care program with several nationally and internationally recognized leading practices in Advance Care Planning, population health and program delivery. Doris has served on numerous provincial and national Committees and Boards and has been part of developing innovative approaches to improve care for patients and families living with serious illness. She is a member of Canadian Researchers at End of Life (CARENET) developing tools and resources for Advance Care Planning. She is passionate about supporting transformative changes within the health care system and in society as a whole as we all embrace the challenges and opportunities of living and dying well in the 21 century.
BC CPC was established in 2013 by the Institute for Health System Transformation and Sustainability (IHSTS). The Ministry of Health, in support of its Provincial End of Life Action Plan, provided the funding to establish the Centre.
